Automakers reported their strongest monthly sales in nearly five years Monday, suggesting a solid end to 2012 and continued recovery in 2013.

Overall industry sales totaled more than 1.14 million units in the United States in November — up 15 percent from the 994,721 reported during the same period a year ago. That translated into a seasonally adjusted annualized selling rate of 15.54 million units, the highest since January 2008.

"It's clear that the industry will come in at the high end of our full-year forecast, which is 14 million to 14.5 million," said Kurt McNeil, vice president of U.S. sales operations for General Motors Co.
