General Motors Co. Wednesday said it will open its fourth information technology innovation center in a Phoenix suburb next month, where it plans to hire 1,000 high-tech workers.

GM has announced information technology innovation centers at its Warren Tech Center in Macomb County; Austin, Texas; and Roswell, Ga., as part of efforts to revamp information technology operations. GM wants to hire more than 4,000 new workers over three to five years at the centers; it's already hired more than 1,000 for centers it has announced since the fall.

GM on April 1 will open a temporary office in Chandler, Ariz. A permanent, $21 million office is expected to open there in the first quarter next year, GM Information Technology Officer Randy Mott said.
