General Motors is considering building a $258-million data center in Milford Township as part of its information technology overhaul, according to documents submitted to the municipality.

The automaker requested a tax abatement to construct a 100,000-square-foot data center at its sprawling Milford Proving Ground campus, where engineers conduct secretive work on future GM products.

The data center would employ about 20 workers, according to the tax abatement request.

Milford Township Treasurer Cindy Dagenhardt said the board set a public hearing for March 20 to consider the 12-year tax abatement. She said the board is submitting questions to GM for more information on the project, including “Who will be hired?” and “Is there any property involved or taxed in prior years?”
